Nick van Veen (OKG19), a past volunteer for the Sony Foundation ABBOX of Fun Holiday Camp, will this year run a holiday camp run in partnership with the same Foundation and St Andrew’s College. After working at the Knox-Abbotsleigh equivalent camp for children with special needs over the 2018-19 Summer holidays, Nick volunteered to assist with the annual Sony Foundation St Andrew’s College Children’s Camp (SSACCC) towards the end of his first year at St Andrew’s College. With three years of SSACCC Committee experience behind him, Nick is now the Camp Convenor, working with students from both St Andrews, and other colleges – including fellow Old Boy Will Sanderson (OKG19) from St Paul’s College. This role has seen him take on responsibility for fundraising forging relationships with sponsors, planning camp activities and liaising with medical volunteers (with a little guidance from Rory Piper, ABBOX Committee Member and “Superhero”). “Sony Camp is an extremely rewarding experience that I have had the privilege to stay involved with since leaving school. Talking to the families and caring for the campers is an eye-opening experience which makes you appreciate the opportunities afforded to you in your life.” This year, the SSACCC will run its 12th annual camp from 1 – 5 November with student volunteers from across the intercollegiate community. Nick is in his final year of a Bachelor of Accounting degree (Co-op) and looking forward to working full time in the world of finance. To support SSACCC in the form of a tax-deductible donation, visit the trybooking fundraising page.
